Although South Gloucestershire is safe compared with many areas of the country, we still have a lot to do to reduce accidents.
The government has set us targets to reach by 2010. They may be difficult to achieve because car ownership in the area is very high, traffic growth is some two to three times the national average and the numbers of residents and jobs here are likely to continue to grow.
Road safety policies
Our road safety policies are set out in the Joint Local Transport Plan 2006/2007-2010/11 for the West of England (JLTP). This area comprises the four Unitary Authorities of Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.
The Plan's road safety objectives are to improve road safety for all road users with particular objectives of:
- Ensuring significant reductions in the number of the most serious road casualties; and
- Achieving improvements in road safety for the most vulnerable sections of the community
