Monitoring road safety schemes

A VAS graph

Comparing accident statistics

A comparison is made between the number of accidents in the 3 years before the installation of the new scheme and the 3 years after the work is carried out. This is illustrated in the form of a table.

Comparing vehicle speeds

If it's appropriate, we compare vehicle speeds before we carry out work such as installing a sign. We also monitor these speeds after the work has been completed.

This can help provide information as to the success of the scheme.

Scheme costs

Government figures estimate that the benefit to the community of preventing each injury accident is approximately £64,000 (2005 prices (source: Highways Economics Note 1))

Using our monitoring information, we calculate the financial benefit of each road safety scheme to the community.

Vehicle-activated signs

South Gloucestershire Council has produced a report that looks at the effectiveness of vehicle-activated signs.
