We aim to maintain highways throughout the winter so that they can be used with reasonable care. Our programme reflects the relative importance of the various routes and the prevailing conditions at a given time.
If there is frost, ice or light snow, our priorities for precautionary salting (gritting) are:
- Major routes connecting centres of population
- Major commuter routes
- Major bus routes
We may not always be able to carry out precautionary salting of all routes. In heavy snowfall, our priority will be to clear the above routes plus at least one route to every village. We will give priority to those with the largest population, and those with no shops or bus services.
You can report a road that needs gritting or request a grit bin refill or new grit bin using our online web forms below.
Before completing a web form, please ensure you have all necessary details to hand. This might include reference numbers, address details or bank details, etc.
Some of our web forms use maps. If you are using Firefox or Internet Explorer web browser and find that maps are not being displayed correctly, please upgrade your browser version to resolve this (see 'Other websites').
Other routes
On other routes where there are potential hazards, we place a limited number of grit bins or heaps of salt/grit mixture that members of the public can use.
If you want us to place a new grit bin or know of one that needs refilling, you can do it here.
Please note that we are not responsible for motorway and trunk roads. These are maintained by the Highways Agency.
