Learning Difficulty Service Improvement Programme

South Gloucestershire Primary Care Trust and South Gloucestershire Council have been working together to create the South Gloucestershire Joint Learning Difficulties Service - to make things better for people with learning difficulties.

The Learning Difficulties Service Improvement Programme has 4 new project groups concerning:

  • What people want to do in the day
  • Making sure people have good health and can make use of ordinary health services
    Where people want to live
  • What staff team do we want for the future so that we can support people with learning difficulties in the right way
  • Making these changes means that the Joint Learning Difficulties Service will work in a different way. This has to happen to make sure the programme works.

As part of the programme the following national plans have been written and can be viewed or downloaded. These plans are available as full or accessible versions. See 'Read more' for details.

The sections below describe previous projects.

Valuing people (March 2001)

This project is concerned with ensuring that people with learning difficulties:

  • Have their rights as citizens upheld
  • Are included in local communities
  • Have a choice of things to do in the day
  • Have opportunities to be independent

See the 'Valuing People Strategy' by clicking on the link in the 'Other Websites' box in the bottom right-hand side of this page for the full government strategy.

Independence, wellbeing and choice (March 2005)

This is concerned with ensuring that people with learning difficulties should:

  • Be included when making decisions
  • Have money to choose individual care

it is important for us to make sure that:

  • We provide services that meet the changing needs of people with learning difficulties
  • We make sure that people with learning difficulties get the most out of life
  • We work with service users, carers and support providers to empower people with learning
  • difficulties to be full citizens of South Gloucestershire

From Care to Citizenship 2006 - 2011

This is the council's plan for the Joint Learning Difficulties Service for the next 5 years.

It describes the changes we need to make to provide a more modern service that meets the needs of people with learning difficulties.
