From 1900 onwards the region became more industrial and South Gloucestershire built up a reputation for engineering excellence. In particular an important aviation industry developed in the early years of the 20th century and continued throughout the war years at Filton and Yate. In World War II, aircraft such as the Blenheim and the Beaufighter were produced as were aircraft gun turrets. These were of huge importance in the war – so much so that the German Luftwaffe (German Air Force) specifically targeted both Yate and Filton in bombing raids. These attacks caused large loss of life on both sides.
