Housing advice for 16-17 year olds

If you are homeless, or think you might become homeless, they are a number of organisations that can help. You will find links to these organisations on this page. They can also help with advice on education, training and finding a job. Please remember that you don’t have to deal with these problems on your own.

If you apply to the Council for housing help, we will work with you and your family to see whether we can keep you, or get you back into your family home. If this is not possible, or it isn’t safe for you to remain in the family home, we will help you move into short term supported housing.

What is Short Term Supported Housing?

There are many reasons why people need to live in accommodation with support.

For example:
• You are a care leaver
• You have been homeless and do not have the skills to manage a tenancy
• You have had problems in the past with a tenancy because you didn’t understand your rights and responsibilities
• You are pregnant or a young single parent
• You are recovering from Drug or Alcohol addiction
• You are a young person at risk
• You have current mental health needs and need support to live independently
• You have a learning disability and need to develop the skills to live independently
• You are fleeing domestic violence
• You are leaving prison

South Gloucestershire Council, through the Supporting People Programme, funds a number of schemes of Short Term Supported Accommodation. Short term means up to 2 years and you must be willing to accept support as part of your accommodation agreement.

Accommodation could be shared housing where you have your own room and share facilities such as a kitchen and living room, with other people in the house. It could be self contained or a mixture of both.
