Essential safety works on Patchway bridge

07 May 2008

Planned repairs to Patchway Bridge, near the A38, will be starting shortly. Highways engineers have inspected the bridge and found that it needs to be strengthened to ensure that it remains safe to use. An additional northbound lane will also be added across the bridge to help reduce congestion in the area.

The works have been planned to start on 19 May 2008 and are expected to take approximately 26 weeks to complete. The work on the bridge will require the closure of the southbound lane. The northbound lane will remain open to vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes only.

Traffic diversions will be put in place for the duration of the works and details of the diversions can be found at www.southglos.gov.uk/patchwaybridge. Pedestrians will be able to cross the bridge safely on a separate footway. Bus services will continue as normal but will follow the same diversion routes as the traffic.

All diversions will be fully signposted.

The bridge will need to be closed completely overnight (11pm – 5am) for two periods of up to 15 days each to carry out repairs which cannot be undertaken safely with the bridge open. This has been planned to take place overnight to minimise disruption.

The bridge will also be closed to all traffic for two weekends. This is expected to be from 11pm Saturday night to 5am Monday morning.

Exact closure dates are not yet known and signs will be erected on site to provide advance notice of when this will happen.

The Council apologises for any inconvenience this essential work will cause and will aim to minimise disruption as much as possible.
