Free cycling courses for children
18 January 2010
A series of free cycling courses have been arranged for children in South Gloucestershire during the February half term.
These courses aim to provide children aged between 7 and 14 with the necessary skills and confidence for making journeys by bike.
They are available in morning and afternoon sessions at the following schools on a number of dates between Monday 15 and Friday 19 February:
• Frampton Cotterell Primary School
• St. Helens School, Alveston
• Christ Church School, Hanham
• The Ridge School, Yate
• Meadowbrook School, Bradley Stoke
There are three levels available:
o Level 1 is for children from school year 3 and above (1x2.5 hour session.)
o Level 2 is for children from school year 5 and above (3x2.5 hour sessions)
o Level 3 is for children from school year 7 and above (3x2.5 hour sessions)
Cllr Brian Allinson, executive member for planning, transportation and strategic environment, said:
“These courses are a useful way to provide children with the confidence required to cycle safely and parents will have the peace of mind that their children have the correct skills and knowledge to cycle on the roads. The courses provide a safe environment for the half term holiday where children can not only learn new skills but also meet other children out in the fresh air.”
The courses are partly funded through the Cycling City Project. In 2008 South Gloucestershire Council, jointly with Bristol City Council, were chosen as Britain’s first Cycling City. Investments have been made in cycle training, infrastructure and working with businesses and communities to encourage cycling.
The courses are on a first come first served basis. The deadline for signing up to the courses is Friday 29 January.
