The role of councillors

South Gloucestershire Council is made up of 70 elected councillors (also known as members). Since the last election (3rd May 2007), the political balance is as follows:

  • 34 Conservative councillors
  • 27 Liberal Democrat councillors
  • 9 Labour councillors

    Councillors have responsibility for:

    • Acting in the interests of the whole community
    • Encouraging the community to participate and become involved in decision-making
    • Listening to the needs of local people and taking their views into account when considering policy proposals and decision-making
    • Being the ultimate policy-makers
    • Representing their communities and dealing with their constituents' concerns
    • Contributing to decision-making and scrutiny 
    • Participating in the activities of anybody to which they are appointed and reporting back to the council
