Council Tax Direct Debit payments due to be taken 12 April 2012
Those Council Tax payers who were due to pay their April instalment by Direct Debit on 12 April 2012 should be aware that due to an error these payments were unfortunately taken a day early on 11 April 2012.
The following options are available to those directly affected:-
- Do nothing, as this is the April instalment and will not be taken twice
- Request the Direct Debit is recalled to your bank account by either contacting your bank and asking for an indemnity claim or telling us, in writing, to refund the money to your account
- If you choose to have the money returned to your account you must make an arrangement to pay this instalment to us straight away. You can pay by Debit/Credit Card online at www.southglos.gov.uk, by phone on 0845 2450682 or send a cheque to us at the address on your Council Tax Bill
- Request that we double up the instalment to be taken in May
We apologise to those affected and if you have incurred any Bank Charges as a direct result of the Direct Debit being taken a day early you may be able to reclaim the charges from us. You will need to provide us with a copy of your bank statement or the letter from your Bank which tells you of the charges applied. This should be sent to the Revenues Service address found on your Council Tax Bill and we will look into refunding the charge to you.
Please note: We have recently been made aware of a possible fraud where a member of the public has been called to advise that the band of their property has been reduced and asking for the customer's bank account details so that a refund can be made. This was not an officer of the council. Under no circumstances should you give out your bank account details if you are contacted in this way. If you are in any doubt please contact this office.
What is the tax used for?
Council tax is a charge based on the occupation or ownership of a property, which is allocated to a tax band according to its market value.
Each year the council's budget and tax is set against the aims and priorities described in our corporate plan and delivery of key local services like:
- Schools
- Road and street maintenance
- Care of the elderly
- Libraries
- Refuse collection and recycling
2008/09 net budget is £10.8m( excluding schools which are fully funded by £151.5m grant).
Money is also collected on behalf of a number of organisations like parish councils, the Avon Fire Authority and police.
Reduced charges and exemptions
There are two elements to council tax, 50% personal and 50% property. The personal element is levied on the basis that there are two adults living in the property.
Council tax bills may be reduced by the application of discounts and exemptions or the award of council tax benefit. See opposite for more information.
Payment options
We have tried to make payment as easy as possible. You can pay by direct debit (split into 10 monthly payments), the telephone or internet (24hr services) or by cheque. You may also be able to reduce the cost of your council tax bill by applying for discounts, exemptions or benefits. Full details can be found in this section.
Paying council tax
Before the start of each financial year, usually in March, each household in South Gloucestershire receives a bill from the council. The option to pay in 10 monthly instalments is open to everybody. All of the available payment methods are shown on this page. You can also check your council tax account balance.
