What is the tax used for?
Council tax is a charge based on the occupation or ownership of a property, which is allocated to a tax band according to its market value.
Each year the council's budget and tax is set against the aims and priorities described in our corporate plan and delivery of key local services like:
- Schools
- Road and street maintenance
- Care of the elderly
- Libraries
- Refuse collection and recycling
2008/09 net budget is £10.8m( excluding schools which are fully funded by £151.5m grant).
Money is also collected on behalf of a number of organisations like parish councils, the Avon Fire Authority and police.
Reduced charges and exemptions
There are two elements to council tax, 50% personal and 50% property. The personal element is levied on the basis that there are two adults living in the property.
Council tax bills may be reduced by the application of discounts and exemptions or the award of council tax benefit. See opposite for more information.
Payment options
We have tried to make payment as easy as possible. You can pay by direct debit (split into 10 monthly payments), the telephone or internet (24hr services) or by cheque. You may also be able to reduce the cost of your council tax bill by applying for discounts, exemptions or benefits. Full details can be found in this section.
Paying council tax
Before the start of each financial year, usually in March, each household in South Gloucestershire receives a bill from the council. The option to pay in 10 monthly instalments is open to everybody. All of the available payment methods are shown on this page. You can also check your council tax account balance.
