Dads: A celebration of Fatherhood from Britain’s Finest and Funniest (edited by Sarah Brown and Gil McNeil)
This anthology of memories from well known people about their fathers is a must read for all sons, daughters and most importantly - fathers. It is interesting to note that the memories are not of expensive holidays or the presents they received but the special times they spent together and how these memories have stayed with them throughout their lives. Many of the recollections are very moving and include regrets that they should have spent more time together. Others are very funny and show that the way we behave can have a huge impact on our children’s future. The memory from Bill Bryson, now a well known travel writer bears this out “My father when behind the wheel, was more or less permanently lost.” My favourite quote is from Gary Lineker and demonstrates a well known truth that no matter how good the father thinks he is at sport, it is never good enough.
My eldest son, George, looked at me and said, “Wouldn’t it be great to have Beckham as your dad?” I asked, “Why would that be?”, and George said, “Because he’s so good at football!”
