Free Swimming for over 60s– Update Following DCMS Announcement

On 17th June the Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport (DCMS), on behalf of the five funding Departments, announced that the resource funding for the Government’s Free Swimming Programme would cease on 31 July 2010.

The programme was reviewed along with other funding commitments, as part of the Government’s overall exercise to find expenditure reductions in 2010/11.

The findings nationally demonstrate that the majority of those accessing the programme (83%) would have done so anyway and that uptake by new users is minimal.

South Gloucestershire Council wishes therefore to alert leisure centre customers that swimmers over sixty will be required to pay for their swimming with effect from 1st August.

The following leisure centres are affected:

- Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre

- Kingswood Leisure Centre

- Longwell Green Leisure Centre

- Thornbury Leisure Centre

- Yate Leisure Centre
