Education in South Gloucestershire

In recent years, our schoolchildren have achieved many individual goals. Each one contributes to the many overall achievements of which our teachers can be proud:
  • An education service rated highly (3 out of 4) by the Audit Commission's Comprehensive Performance Assessment, with the whole authority assessed as good
  • Primary school performance that remains in the top 25% nationally
  • 78% of pupils achieved level 4+ in primary schools at Key Stage 2 in English
  • A rise in the performance of secondary schools with 54% achieving five A* - C grades at GCSE
  • 1 'Leading Edge' school
  • 11 specialist secondary schools
  • 2 Initial teacher training schools

South Gloucestershire is a unitary authority, created in 1996 as part of the government's plan for local government reorganisation. Our unitary status enables us to provide seamless services for the benefit of the population we serve. We are also the local education authority – a fairly unique role for a local authority and one that allows us to put education at the top of the public agenda.

Commitment to employee diversity

The council is committed to achieving a workforce that reflects the diversity of the local community and providing opportunity for all employees to reach their maximum potential through training and development.
