Am I an independent student?

Students sat on steps
An independent student is a student who no longer is expected to rely on parental support.
If you are an independent student (because you are over 25 or married or in a civil partnership) your income and that of any spouse or partner (of the same sex or opposite sex) will be taken into account.

You are an independent student if you:

  • Are 25 or over before the start of the academic year for which you are applying - before 1st September for autumn beginners
  • Have been married or entered into a civil partnership before the start of the academic year for which you are applying for support. You will need to show your marriage certificate or civil partnership schedule
  • Have supported yourself for at least 3 years before the start of the academic year of your course (proof will have to be shown - usually payslips, P60 etc.)
  • Have no living parents
  • Can show you are permanently estranged from your parents (independent proof from a third party would have to be submitted - for example from a social worker, police or headteacher etc.)
  • Have the care of a child(ren)
