Second-hand smoke is particularly harmful to babies and small children and when they breathe-in the smoke, the poisonous gases and dust like particles it contains can get into every cell in their bodies. Second-hand smoke is known to cause a number of health problems in children, in particular asthma and breathing problems, behaviour and learning difficulties, middle ear infections and cot death. The council and Primary Care Trust have got together to launch a Smokefree Homes project aimed at protecting local children from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke.
