What does housing benefit cover?

Housing benefit is paid to cover your rent but not any service charges such as gas, electricity or water. If your rent includes other service charges, we will decide if they are covered by housing benefit when you make your application.

If you rent your property from a private landlord please see "Local Housing Allowance".

Examples of service charges which are NOT covered by housing benefit are:

  • Water charges
  • Meals (if you pay board)
  • Gas
  • Electricity
  • Care, support or supervision costs
  • Day-to-day living costs
