Street lighting is provided to illuminate the roads and paths aiding and improving access for the road user and the general public.
We maintain approximately 30,000 street lights and 4,000 lit road traffic signs in the district.
Reporting faults
Fault reports from the public are a great help, usually enabling the light to be restored more quickly. If you wish to report a faulty light please make a note of the location or street light column number and use the online form. It is very helpful if you report any faults you notice as this usually means the light will be repaired more quickly.
Lighting that the council is not responsible for:
- lighting on Merlin Housing Society land - contact Merlin Housing Society on 01454 821100.
- private or unadopted highway - on new housing developments or unadopted highway, the developer is still responsible for the lighting until the highway becomes adopted. If you are not sure if a street has been adopted or you do not know who the developer is please notify us and we will contact the developer.
Additional lighting
We get many requests to upgrade street lights or provide more lights along the roads. Whilst we understand and recognise these concerns, there are no funds available for new street lighting. Please note we do not repair traffic signals. To report a faulty traffic light, please call 0800 854229.
