We clear litter from land we are responsible for. Generally, we clear town centres daily and other heavily used areas (such as by local shops or along routes to school) either three times a week or once a week. All other streets in South Gloucestershire are cleaned as required. We do not clear litter from private land but we will contact the landowner if possible. However, if litter on private land poses a serious risk to public health and safety, the council's Environmental Protection Department can take action.
Litter bins
There are about 800 street litter bins in South Gloucestershire. Depending on their location, they are emptied at frequencies ranging from every day to once a week. You must not use them for household or trade waste.
We do not have the funds to place additional bins at the moment.
You can help
Please do not drop litter – either use a litter bin or take it home with you. It is a criminal offence to drop litter, and you could face a fine of up to £2500. The council also has powers to require certain types of businesses to reduce the effects of litter that can be attributed to them. If you see litter, or a damaged or overflowing litter bin, please contact us or fill in the form.
