Lost and found dogs

Collie in kennels
The dog wardens have a duty to seize any dog found straying, i.e. unaccompanied in a public place or on private property where it is not meant to be.

Finding a dog

If you find a stray dog during office hours, Monday to Friday, you should phone the Streetcare helpdesk immediately. We will come and collect it as quickly as possible. As from April 6th 2008 the police relinquished any responsibility for stray dogs. If you find a dog out of office hours please call 01454 868686 for information on where to take the stray dog, Alternatively stray dogs can be taken directly to our kennels at The Gables Westerleigh Hill, Westerleigh, phone 07971682292 at any time between 7am - 11pm.

Losing a dog

If you lose a dog, you must inform the dog wardens at once, so they can trace you when the dog is found. If you lose your dog outside office hours, contact 01454 868686 or phone the kennels direct on 07971682292.

Dogs we find

We keep dogs we find in kennels near Yate. If the dog has identification, or you have told us it is missing, we will contact you. If not, we will keep it in kennels for up to seven days and you must contact us to claim it.  You will need to arrange a time to collect your dog during office hours.

Charges

The council will charge you for collecting and looking after your dog. The charges are:

  • £52.00 per dog for collection
  • £7.20 per dog per night kennelling charge

If your dog has an up-to-date microchip or tag clearly identifying the owner, there will be no charge for the first night in kennels. We can microchip for free any dog we collect. Please bring some identification with you, such as a driving licence or bill that shows your address.

Unclaimed dogs

If a dog is not claimed within seven days, or the charge is unpaid, it becomes council property. We will then find the dog a new home, either through a rescue centre or privately. We never put dogs to sleep unless they are too aggressive to be rehomed or unless a vet advises us to.

Register of stray dogs

We keep a register of all stray dogs captured by local authorities. Contact us if you would like to view it.
