Overview
South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) and SITA (South Gloucestershire Ltd) are working in partnership to deliver a high quality, cost-effective and sustainable integrated waste management service. The service is provided through a 25 year PFI (private finance initiative) contract which started on 31st July 2000.
Under the Sort It!* project the following services are provided:
- Collection services - recycling and residual waste, together with provision of wheeled bins and boxes
- Provision of civic amenity sites (known as Sort It!* centres)
- Recycling and composting
- Transport
- Residual waste disposal
Targets and achievements
One of the driving principles of the project is to increase the quantity of waste recycled or recovered and reduce the amount sent for landfill disposal. The table below sets out key contract targets and when they were achieved.
| Target |
When achieved |
| 45% of households with gardens to have received a home compost bin by 1st April 2002 |
March 2002 |
| 25% of collected waste to be recycled/composted by 1st April 2003 |
April 2004 |
| 33 % of civic amenity waste to be recovered (i.e. recycled/composted) by 1st April 2003 |
January 2001 |
| 40% of all waste handled through Sort It!* to be recycled/composted by 1st April 2005 |
2005/06 |
The recovery targets include DIY soil and rubble delivered to Sort It!* centres and segregated for recycling.
Recycling/composting and disposal data for 2006/07 is tabulated below:
