Project Description:
Milbury Heath, a picturesque hamlet just off the A38 north of Thornbury, lost its village green pond in the 1960’s when it was apparently filled in with spoil from road building operations. Local residents approached the Council for help to restore the pond and assistance with funding. The Landscape Consultancy surveyed the site and, following research into geotextiles
and impermeable membranes, designed a simple scheme taking into account the limitations of the topography of the site and the under ground services. A shallow reed bed area was designed to assist with the sustainable drainage of runoff from the lane.
When the pond was finished the Landscape Consultancy facilitated community involvement in the establishment of marginal and aquatic pond plants. The village pond has made a significant contribution to both the habitat value and landscape character of the locality. Swallows dip the water feeding on insects during summer evenings, five species of dragonfly have been noted and a heron occasionally visits the pond. Residents maintain the village green and have provided a seat and planted shade trees, which attract local walkers and picnickers.
