Throughout South Gloucestershire there are buildings and structures which, while not statutory listed buildings are of good quality design and appearance or have historical significance, or are important features in their own right and which also make a significant contribution to the character and appearance of the locality. This supplementary planning document (SPD) provides guidance on South Gloucestershire's 'Local List' of buildings and structures which, although non-statutory, will be a material consideration which the council will take into account when considering planning applications.
While the information is as up to date as possible it is not definitive, and should be checked before use.
Additions to the Local List
Do you have any suggestions?
South Gloucestershire Council welcomes suggestions for additions to the Local List of buildings and structures which make a significant contribution to the character and distinctiveness of the locality.
Can anyone make suggestions?
Yes we welcome suggestions from owners, other individuals, organisations such as parish councils or local history groups etc. The suggestions should contribute to the special character and / or interest of the locality. Anyone can make suggestions but these should meet the criteria set out in the Local List SPD (see under read more)
How do I put forward a suggestion?
You will need to provide details of the address and location along with a description and photograph of your suggested building or structure. You should also identify which of the 10 Local List criteria are considered to be met to justify its inclusion on the list.
What happens next?
Nominations will be carefully considered against the Council’s adoption criteria, and will be subject to the same independent validation process as those on the current list. Proposals for additions will be processed every two years and ideally we would like suggestions before 01/09/2011. Suggestions will of course be accepted after this and put forward to the next available processing date.
What if I do not agree?
Owners may challenge listing by demonstrating that their building or structure does not meet any of the 10 Criteria listed.

A number of buildings have been removed from the Local List because they lie within the curtilage of a listed building and have a higher level of protection than Locally Listed Buildings, their landmark quality is not diminished.
A list of these buildings can be found under 'read more'.
Although it was not part of the assessors brief, it is nevertheless felt that the following properties have the potential for designation at national level:
• Former Miners' Cottage, Narrow Lane, Staple Hill, Kingswood
• Oaklands, Oaklands Drive, Almondsbury
• Railway Bridge, Bridge Road, Mangotsfield
Equally, though the assessor was not asked to assess properties that are not on the Local List, it does seem anomalous that the some of the outbuildings at Greystone Court, Horton Road, Little Sodbury, should be recommended for inclusion in the Local List but not the main house itself, nor any of the older barns and byres that make up the Greystone Court farmstead, and it is recommended that consideration be given to adding the whole group of farm buildings to the Local List.
