Noise Action Week 23 - 27 May 2011

Noise Action Week aims to promote awareness and practical solutions to everyday noise problems.

During Noise Action Week 2011 the Environmental Protection Team will be visiting various licensed premises throughout the district to encourage patrons to leave quietly. As closing time approaches and just afterwards, noise and disturbance can occur as patrons leave and disperse from licensed premises. This can cause annoyance to local residents particularly when extended hours can mean that this is happening later than has perhaps been the case in the past. Environmental Protection has therefore chosen Noise Action Week to raise awareness ahead of the summer period.

Previous campaigns have seen Environmental Protection work with landlords to promote their patrons to leave the premises quietly. This has included the use of posters, prominent signs and signing up to a Leave Quietly Campaign. However, this year the focus will be on the patrons themselves and via the use of innovative new technology Environmental Protection will be using “Bluetooth” to message patrons on their mobile phones. The message will contain an animation reminding patrons of their responsibility in leaving the premises quietly and to respect local residents. This will be sent to patrons at various licensed premises throughout the District during Noise Action Week 2011.

Senior Environmental Health Officer Shaun Fudge said “We often discuss with colleagues the most effective way to target patrons to ensure our messages are delivered. The use of Bluetooth has not really been utilised by the Council up to now and we are looking forward to using this technology. It enables us to deliver our message in a light hearted way while ensuring that we reach our target audience.

The machine we use also allows us to monitor how many people have received and accepted the message which we have not been able to do with previous messages such as posters. The emphasis is for patrons to have a good time but just to respect local residents as they leave the premises.”

Noise Action Week provides the Council with a great opportunity to:

• Promote practical solutions to everyday noise problems
• Promote communication
• To inform the public of the services that are available
• Educate and inform noise makers and noise sufferers about noise reduction and to
• Encourage everyone to take a quiet moment to consider the noises they make and the noise that affects them - and what can be done to reduce the impact

For Noise Action Week everybody is urged to:

• Consider the noise they make and the effect it has on others
• Consider the noises that disturb them
• Use our practical solutions to everyday noise problems
