From 1 October 2011 Wessex Water became responsible for the ownership and maintenance of private sewers following changes made by the government.

Property owners will remain responsible where the blockage is to the pipeworks serving only their property and it is located within their boundary, or where they have a septic tank, cesspit or package treatment works.
