Avoid driving if at all possible. If you have to drive:
- Clear ALL snow from your car – this stops snow falling onto the road or into other road users.
- Make sure that ALL your windows are clear.
- Drive much more slowly than usual – keep greater distances between you and other road users.
- Put your headlights on – if necessary use fog lights as well.
- Make sure that your car is roadworthy for the conditions and that you have packed an emergency kit for your car.
If your heating fails:
- Try to ascertain the cause – contact your energy supplier.
- Close internal doors to minimise heat loss and minimise movement of warm air around your home.
- Draw curtains and blinds to minimise heat loss through your windows.
- Put on extra clothing, including a warm hat. Many layers are better at keeping you warm rather than a single thick layer
- Beware of unventilated fires/heat sources – CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING KILLS. Carbon monoxide is odourless, tasteless and can only be detected with functioning and correctly sited alarms.
- Eating hot meals and drinks will help keep you warm and maintain your morale.
- Be a good neighbour – check that your neighbours are ok; particularly the elderly.
If you wish to clear snow and ice:
- Please refer to "The Snow Code" - guidance provided by the government on clearing snow and ice from pavements or public spaces. You can access this by clicking on "The Snow Code" under "Other Websites".
