South Gloucestershire is blessed with many sites for nature. Some are council owned or managed, others are private or run by Avon Wildlife Trust, Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust or the Forest of Avon.
There are seven Local Nature Reserves (LNRs) in South Gloucestershire. They are important places for people and nature because they:
- Support a rich and vibrant mix of wildlife
- Provide readily accessible natural open green space
- Present opportunities for everyone to learn
- Are places where communities can get together
- Provide breathing spaces, making the places we live and work less stressful
Local Nature Reserves are natural sites that have a legal status. They are designated by the council after close consultation with local communities and English Nature. The designation of these reserves helps to protect some of our best wildlife habitats within our rural/urban fringe environment whilst making an important contribution to the UK's biodiversity.
