Waste

Waste and its disposal can have significant impacts on climate change. Many items that could be reused or recycled are thrown away, meaning more resources and energy is needed to replace them. Biodegradable waste that breaks down at landfill sites releases harmful greenhouse gases. In addition, the collection and transport of waste to distant disposal points uses a large quantity of fossil fuels.

It is important to reuse unwanted goods if possible and recycle those which cannot be reused, including composting.

Waste, rubbish & recycling

South Gloucestershire Council promotes the reduction of household waste and the increase in the amount of waste we re-use and recycle. Waste, rubbish and recycling services are provided by Sort It!* - a partnership between the council and SITA South Gloucestershire. Go to the ‘See also’ link on the right hand side of this page for details about the Sort It!* services, which include, household rubbish collections, recycling collections and centres to take household waste and composting.

Local Waste Strategy 2008-2011

The strategy proposes to increases household waste recycling to 50% by 2010. To read the proposals in detail, see the ‘Read More’ section on the right hand side of this page.

Council waste

The council has adopted a range of corporate targets, aiming to reduce the overall amount of waste produced by its buildings. For corporate offices, we recycle 57% of office waste. We are working towards reducing the total waste produced and increasing recycled waste even further through promoting behaviour change to staff and introducing new practices within our buildings.
