20 January Update - Filton Airfield
In response to a request from the Inspector, the Council has prepared a report (please see the Filton Airfield webpage) which sets out the implications and changes to the Core Strategy and supporting documents arising from the proposed redevelopment of Filton Airfield.
19 January Update - Publication of retail evidence base documents
The following documents are now available to view on the Evidence base webpage:
- Report by Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners (Dec 2010) on the catchment area and role of The Mall Regional Shopping Centre, to support their representations to the Pre-Submission Core Strategy;
- Report by Roger Tym & Partners/Hollissvincent (July 2011) reviewing the Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners report;
- Update to the Town Centre and Retail Study 2010 and Retail Impact Assessment of potential growth in floorspace at The Mall Regional Shopping Centre, Roger Tym & Partners (Dec 2011).
22 December Update – Publication of the December 2011 Core Strategy incorporating Post-Submission Changes

15th December update
Following consideration by South Gloucestershire Councillors at a meeting of the Council on the 14th December, the December 2011 Core Strategy incorporating Post-Submission Changes has been approved for publication by South Gloucestershire Council.
It is anticipated that the December 2011 Core Strategy, together with the supporting December 2011 Sustainability Appraisal Report, Changes to Proposals Maps, Strategic Green Belt Assessment, and other supporting documents, will be published by 22 December and the submission of representations invited for a period of seven weeks from 22 December 2011 until 10 February 2012.
- PLEASE NOTE THAT THE FORMAL PERIOD IS NOW 29 DECEMBER 2011 UNTIL 17 FEBRUARY 2012
Further formal details regarding the availability of documents and how to make representations will be published on our website prior to the commencement of the publication period.
7th December update
The December 2011 Core Strategy incorporating Post-Submission Changes will be considered by the Council at the following meetings:
- Joint East and West Development Control Committees and Planning, Transportation and Strategic Environment Select Committee on 12 December 2011;
- Cabinet on 13 December 2011; and
- Full Council on 14 December 2011.
The agendas and reports for these meetings are available on the Council’s website at www.southglos.gov.uk/localdemocracy (copy and paste address into your web browser), together with information on the venues and times of the meetings and the opportunities for public engagement.
The reports include the Council's review of the BAE Systems Aviation Options Report for Filton Airfield as appendix 6, as well as the further technical work undertaken on Green Belt and housing matters.
The December 2011 Core Strategy incorporating Post-Submission Changes, Sustainability Appraisal report, and details on how representations can be made, will be published as soon as practicable after the Full Council meeting. Further details will be posted on this page as soon as they are available.
28th November update
The Council has now published a number of new documents, these can be found on the Consultation and Engagement webpage and on the Filton Airfield webpage (links below). The documents are:
- Consultation & Engagement Statement that outlines all consultation and engagement undertaken on the Core Strategy between April and November 2011.
- Filton Airfield Consultants Brief – provided to consultants undertaking an independent review of the airfield.
- Schedule of all of the comments received during engagement regarding Filton Airfield in October.
The December 2011 Core Strategy incorporating Post-Submission Changes will be considered by South Gloucestershire Council at:
- the Joint East and West Development Control Committees and Planning, Transportation and Strategic Environment Select Committee Meeting on 12 December 2011;
- the Cabinet Meeting on 13 December 2011; and
- the Full Council Meeting on 14 December 2011.

15th November update
In response to recent correspondence between the Council and planning consultants representing clients promoting land at Warmley (east Bristol), the Inspector has provided further clarification as to the further work he expects the Council to undertake in relation to the Green Belt in South Gloucestershire. This correspondence is available to view in the 'Read more' box on the right of this page ('Inspector Correspondence - Green Belt').
7th October update
Following the receipt of the Inspector’s letter in which he set out his findings from the Exploratory meeting, the Council responded to him on 2nd September with a proposed programme for undertaking additional technical and community engagement work on the Core Strategy. The Inspector has now responded to the Council’s letter and confirmed that he will suspend the Examination for up to six months commencing from the beginning of October. All of these letters can be viewed in the ‘Read more’ box on the right of this page.
The Council is now undertaking the required work which will inform the production of a refreshed Core Strategy that incorporates ‘Post-Submission Changes’. This will be published for full public consultation from December 2011. Please note that all representations submitted on the Core Strategy to date will still be considered by the Inspector. Following collation of the representations received as part of that consultation the Examination process will then resume from March 2012.
21st September Update
We will be holding a series of public exhibitions about Filton airfield during October. The Council wants to listen to what local people have to say both about the proposed closure and options for proposed redevelopment. Details about the public exhibitions and how people can get involved is available on the 'Filton Airfield' webpage - link on the right hand side of this page, or type www.southglos.gov.uk/filtonairfield into your web browser.
2nd September update
The Inspector holding the Core Strategy Examination has now provided his findings following the Exploratory Meeting held on 29th June in a letter to the Council. The Council has considered the Inspector’s letter and produced a response which has been forwarded to him for his attention. The letter and the Council’s response are available to view in the ‘Read more’ box on the right of this page.
