How do I report an unauthorised encampment?
If you want to report an unauthorised encampment, please contact us. We will need to know:
- Where the encampment is. Please be as clear as you can about the location
- How many caravans are involved
- What your enquiry or complaint is
What we will do
Private land
If the encampment is on private land it is up to the owner of the land to take steps to remove it. The travellers unit can provide advice and assistance.
Council-owned land
We do not have an automatic right to move travellers off council-owned land. We can only do so if travellers are a danger or are causing problems for local residents.
When we receive a report of an encampment we will visit the site. We will assess the site and look at how it is managed. If there are problems - for example excessive noise, we will talk to the travellers to try to solve the problem. We try to avoid formal court action.
