An active mind = an enquiring mind = an informed mind!
• What is the name of the Roman Road that runs from Chester to Colchester?
• Where can I read the Magna Carta?
• What is the meaning of the word serdab in an architectural context?
(See below for answers)
You could try Google but can you be sure of the authenticity and accuracy of the website you select and what if you get 10,000 possible sites?
South Gloucestershire library service subscribes to some of the best available information sites in the UK to ensure you get the right answer from definitive information resources.
These include
• The Oxford English Dictionary, which will further your capabilities as a wordsmith
• The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, which gives you an insight into the lives of more than 55,000 people who helped shape British history.
• Oxford Reference Online, which holds more than 300 dictionaries, yearbooks and subject reference books as well as a 20th Century time-line for a number of subject areas.
• Ancestry: a database of births, deaths and marriages as well as census information for the UK to help you to trace your ancestry back to its roots. This particular resource can only be accessed within the library via one of our computers. You can book a session on the computer at the library of your choice. Guidance notes are available and during quiet times staff will help you to get started.
If you are unfamiliar with electronic Internet resources or you want to reduce the time and work involved in finding an answer why not try the Library Enquiry Centre?
