Six Top Tips
South Gloucestershire Council's support for National Childhood Obesity Week (4th – 10th July, 2011)has all year-round relevance. Obesity is one of the most serious health epidemics facing our society today with 1 in 3 children currently overweight or obese in the UK.
Families are encouraged to incorporate these 6 top tips into their everyday life to help them become fitter and healthier.
1. Move more! - Aim to walk or cycle for an extra 20 minutes every day this week and you will be active for over two hours!
2. Get 5 - Make sure you get your 5 A DAY by setting yourself the challenge of including at least one serving of fruit or veg with each of your meals and snacks.
3. Try out - Try a new activity this week, such as street dance, trampolining, circus skills, tennis or martial arts and you might find you want to keep on doing it!
4. Blast off with breakfast - Start the day with a healthy, filling breakfast! Swap low fibre cereal or toast for no-added-sugar muesli, porridge oats or shredded wheat, or wholemeal toast.
5. Everything in moderation - Fruit juice can contain a lot of sugar so try to limit it to a maximum of one small glass or carton (200ml) a day.
6. Get wise with water - Water keeps you well hydrated and studies show that children concentrate better at school when they drink more water. So, get wise and aim to drink 6-8 glasses a day.
