Duke of Edinburgh's Award

Who is it for?

  • Young people aged 14-25

What do you have to do?

  • Take part in a number of activities covering the 3 sections of the award and go on an expedition (as well as a residential fieldtrip at gold level) for the required length of time (at least 1 hour a week for between 3 months to 18 months depending on the level)
  • There are 3 levels: bronze, silver and gold
  • The sections are skills, service and physical recreation. There is a wide choice of possible activities for each section
  • Skills (as in learning a new one) could cover circus skills, bird watching, cycle maintenance, drama, fishing, playing a musical instrument, a baby sitting course, etc.
  • Service (volunteering and helping others in the community) could cover helping run the coffee bar, helping to run the junior group at the youth centre, etc.
  • Physical recreation (as in doing some kind of sport) could be dancing, trampoline, football, keep-fit, judo, etc.
  • You need to log the time you spend working for the award and this needs to be signed off by a mentor/instructor
  • Some local youth centres now deliver some sections of the award like the skills and service sections, while open award centres deliver the whole award

What do you get?

  • After completing each section, you will get a section certificate issued by the local Duke of Edinburgh officer
  • After completing all the sections of the award you'll get a Duke of Edinburgh's Award certificate
  • The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is recognised nationally
