Could you help to educate and care for young children?

Pre-schools and playgroups provide part-time childcare and education, generally for children aged between two years 9 months and five years old. Most pre-schools and playgroups provide a range of morning or afternoon sessions each week, usually during term-time. At least half of the staff team within a pre-school or playgroup need to be qualified, so there will be opportunities to train and gain qualifications.

What the job involves

Working in pre-schools and playgroups involves planning, preparing and delivering the curriculum through play activities, offering children an appropriate level of support and stimulation in a safe and caring environment. It is important to liaise with parents and carers to ensure that each child's needs are recognised and met. To become a pre-school or playgroup assistant, you will need to be willing to undertake a NVQ level 2 or equivalent in childcare education.

If you are interested in becoming a pre-school or playgroup leader you will need to have, or be training towards, a NVQ level 3 in childcare education.

There may be funding available to help with the cost of the training.

If you are willing to learn and are committed to supporting young children and families, then working in a pre-school or playgroup could be for you.
