Lead childminding scheme

Introduction

Lead childminders are experienced quality assured childminders who have met criteria defined by the Learning and School Effectiveness Service. Their role is to offer support to new childminders from the start of their registration period of up to a year.

What is the intended purpose of the lead childminder scheme?

To help and support newly-registering childminders in the first twelve months of running their business, in person, by telephone or in a small group setting.

This should result in:

  • The provision of a higher quality service with more consistency
  • An increase in the number of confident and well informed childminders
  • Continuous professional development for existing childminders
  • Growth in the membership of local childminding groups
  • A decrease in the number of new childminders leaving the profession in the early stages

When is the scheme introduced?

You will hear about the lead childminder scheme at the childminding pre-registration briefing session. During the introduction to childcare practice (home-based) course, which is unit 1 of a level 3 qualification, you will be given the option to receive support from a lead childminder. You will find out about the support available within South Gloucestershire and meet or be put in contact with a lead childminder from your local area.

What help will I receive from the lead childminder?

  • Contact in person, by telephone or email at least once a month
  • Support after registration for a period of up to a year
  • Introduction to local groups, information about appropriate events and what is available within your local area
  • Information about the work of the Children and Young People Information Service, especially vacancy-filling and other functions of the Learning and School Effectiveness Service
  • Support regarding business paperwork, contracts and working with parents

How will the scheme be reviewed?

The service will be monitored through quarterly meetings with the lead childminders. New childminders will be asked to complete evaluation forms at various stages of their support.

Must I sign up for this scheme?

No, it is entirely optional. However, unless you tell us otherwise we will assume that you wish to be included in the scheme and receive valuable support from a lead childminder.
