Background
The local authority is committed to ensuring that the implementation of the South Gloucestershire Extended Schools Strategy meets the identified needs of specific communities. Access to childcare is a key element of the extended schools plan. The guidance is intended to enable schools to develop childcare to meet the needs of parents and the local community and to help schools meet these identified objectives within the Children and Young Peoples plan.
Who is this guide for and why has it been produced?
The aim of this guide is to help schools and providers that are looking to develop childcare
provision as part of an extended schools service. This guidance is available for all schools,
especially those that are considering either providing childcare as part of their school provision,
or asking an independent provider to deliver the service for them. Additionally it is hoped that this
guide will also be of use to providers so that the process for developing provision in and around
schools and the support that is available from the Local Authority is clear.
Whilst this guide provides an introduction to the main factors to consider when setting up
childcare provision, it is by no means exhaustive. This guide has been produced as an
introductory document only, so that schools can start to consider the options available to them,
and the many different factors to consider when developing childcare as part of an extended
school service.
Schools can also signpost parents and carers to the Children and Young People Information
Service who can provide information on childcare provision available in the area. Specific support
is available from the Extended Schools Strategy Manager for both schools and providers considering developing childcare provision.
