Scams - clothing collections

Trading Standards have seen an increase in the number of complaints received about clothing collections within the district. Large numbers of leaflets are being dropped door to door requesting that householders donate unwanted clothing and other household items.

Recent leaflets imply that any donations will go to help the victims of the Chernobyl disaster, African appeals, charities in Eastern Europe and even for those caught up in the Tsunami. Trading Standards strongly suspect that any donations are sold on for commercial gains and not used for charitable causes.

Be suspicious of such clothing collections and remember that the only way to guarantee that donations benefit good causes is to only deal with charities that you can identify as genuine, or take your clothing direct to a charity shop.
