Hackney carriage and private hire vehicles

If you wish to drive a hackney carriage or a private hire vehicle, your vehicle must be licensed.

If you are applying for a licence for the first time, the vehicle must be less than five years old. If you are renewing your licence, the vehicle can be up to 10 years old. However, all vehicles over 12 months old must have a valid MOT certificate. This certificate must not be more than four weeks old when you apply for a licence. MOT certificates must be issued by an MOT station within South Gloucestershire.

Before a licence can be issued your vehicle has to pass a vehicle inspection. This will take place at the council’s garage.
