Investigation of accidents

If we receive a report of an accident we will carry out an assessment and may visit the premises to investigate what happened. This depends on several factors including:
  • The severity of the injury
  • The likelihood of the accident recurring
  • The extent of possible breaches of legislation
  • The type of accident
  • The past record of the business

Usually, these investigations are unannounced, but we may make an appointment.

What to expect from a visit

During an inspection, we will probably want to speak to managers, supervisors, employees, health and safety representatives and possibly other concerned individuals. We will also look at the working conditions including:

  • How health and safety information is communicated to employees
  • Adequacy of first aid provisions
  • Correct use and storage of chemicals
  • Safety of equipment and machinery
  • General cleanliness

We will also examine various records such as:

  • Your health and safety policy statement (if applicable)
  • Risk assessments (if applicable)
  • Plant maintenance and inspection records
  • Training records
  • Accident records

At the end of the visit we will advise on what further action, if any, is going to be taken. We will then follow this up in writing. Each action will be given a time limit. We will then revisit the premises to check the action has been carried out.
