Health and safety - routine inspections

Fire exit

We carry out health and safety inspections in offices, shops, warehouses, places used for leisure activities and other non-industrial premises. The Health and Safety Executive deals with factories and other industrial operations.

The aim is to ensure that conditions in workplaces are safe and healthy for all employees, the self-employed and visiting members of the public.

What to expect

Inspections are carried out on a routine basis, often unannounced. Higher-risk premises are visited more frequently than those with a lower risk.

During an inspection, officers will need to be satisfied that any hazards to health, safety and welfare that arise in connection with work have been identified and the associated risks adequately controlled.

Officers will look at the level of health and safety training of managers and employees to ensure that it is of a good standard. Checks will also be made on the adequacy of structural and environmental conditions andĀ also on the safety of equipment.
