Event safety

When large groups of people gather in confined spaces, it can become dangerous. The Bradford and Hillsborough football ground disasters in the 1980s are examples of what can go wrong.

Large sports grounds are now covered by comprehensive safety legislation. However, many public events are not covered by specific safety controls.

Event Safety Guide

The council has joined forces with the police, fire brigade and ambulance services to form the Event Safety Group. The group offers guidance to event organisers on how to run a safe and trouble-free event.

The group has also produced a guide to help event organisers. This covers a wide range of activities, including:

  • Community events
  • Marches
  • Sporting events
  • Bonfire and firework displays

It contains the following sections:

  • Introduction to event safety
  • Your event and things to consider
  • Sources of further information
  • Useful contacts
  • Event safety checklist
  • Safety checklist for events on the highway
  • Event notification form

Event organisers must also make sure they comply with the various legal requirements relating to events attended by the public.
