Health and safety

Our job is to prevent death, injury and ill health to those at work and those affected by work activities.

If you have your own business or have been affected by unsafe work, you can use the following information and web links to take action or maintain safety. You can also talk to a health and safety expert on an information line provided by the Health and Safety Executive on 0845 345 0055.

You can download our handbook that provides detailed information on important safety topics and legislation here. Printed copies can be requested by emailing or telephoning the number shown at the right of this page.

The responsibility for regulating health and safety is divided between Local Authorities, such as South Gloucestershire Council, and the Health and Safety Executive.

We enforce legislation, inspect, investigate accidents, deal with complaints and provide advice to businesses in certain types of local premises that include:

  • Offices
  • Shops
  • Warehouses
  • Hotels and catering facilities
  • Places used for leisure activities
  • Consumer services (such as launderettes, hairdressers and tyre-fitters)
  • Residential care homes
  • Churches
  • Other non-industrial premises

The Health and Safety Executive has a national resposibility for regulating health and safety in premises that include:

  • Factories and other industrial operations
  • Building sites
  • Transport by road, rail, air or water
  • Farms
  • Fairgrounds

We also contribute to national safety campaigns, safety and health awareness days and support local businesses by providing health and safety training.
