Food is essential to life and is a major influence on health. A balanced, nutritious diet is vital for physical and mental well-being and protects against the onset of many diseases throughout life.

It is important that people have the choice of a variety of foods to obtain the range of nutrients that the body requires. The ability to access a healthy diet depends on many factors including what food is provided in schools, workplaces and commercial outlets such as restaurants. Caterers therefore have an increasing influence on the foods people eat.

The Award is open to all types of eating place and caterers, ranging from take-aways, workplace canteens and hotels.

The aims of the Award is to encourage caterers to meet food hygiene requirements in addition to making 'Healthy food' an attractive and appetizing option for their customers.
