Supporting disabled people into work

Disability Confident
Disability Confident is the council’s programme to support disabled people into meaningful work within the council and employers across South Gloucestershire. We are dedicated to help disabled people who want to work and we offer different types of support according to individual interests and requirements.

If you are entering employment for the first time, have had a break from employment, or are returning to work after acquiring a disability we can help you to:

• Identify your skills and interests and match them to relevant employers and vacancies
• Receive benefits advice from Jobcentre Plus
• Develop your skills in writing a CV and cover letter, and in completing application forms
• Prepare for interviews, including carrying out mock interviews
• Arrange a work experience placement to try out a new area of work, update your skills and experience, and build confidence before entering the world of work
• Work with specialist support agencies for practical and financial support including disability aids and equipment, training, jobsearch skills, confidence building, mentoring and job coaching etc
• Gain a good understanding of the council’s recruitment and employment practices and employer expectations
• Access flexible recruitment methods e.g. working interviews
• Provide ongoing support once you are in a job

We work with you and potential employers to ensure that reasonable adjustments are made through the recruitment process and once you are in a job. Reasonable adjustments are wide ranging but, for example, we can arrange for BSL interpreters and other communication support, accessible venues, information in different formats e.g. audiotape, large print, extra time for assessments, help to agree flexible working arrangements etc.
